A full range of services and support

Accounts and Bookkeeping

Once you drop off all your invoices and e-bank statements, our team will do all of the processing and bookkeeping ready to prepare your annual, management or abridged accounts.

Our accounting and book-keeping services are geared towards reducing your compliance burden and, at the same time, providing you with a meaningful analysis of how your business is performing. With this in mind, we will always take the time to explain your accounts so that you understand what is going on financially within your business.

We’re not just number crunchers. We invest in getting to know your business so that whether you are still finding your feet in the industry, building an established brand or entering a period of significant change or strain, we can use the accounts to measure how the business is performing against your goals and connect you with the right commercial and professional expertise to support you.

Self Assessment

A tax return is a form on which you report details of your taxable income. HMRC uses the information you provide to work out your tax bill – or whether you are due a refund.

Almost a million people receive HMRC self-assessment tax fines every year. The self-assessment regime is full of penalties and HMRC enquiry powers are extensive. It’s important that returns are correctly completed, they are filed on time and all supporting documents are retained for the appropriate period of time.

As well as completing your tax return we can assist with advice on your tax liabilities, identifying suitable tax planning opportunities and in completing all necessary tax computations to take the worry away from you.

VAT Planning and Compliance

The changes to UK and EU legislation make Value Added Tax (VAT) a complex area to understand. Making Tax Digital (MTD) became mandatory from 1 April 2019, requiring most VAT-registered businesses to keep digital accounting records and file their VAT returns directly from these to HMRC.

Our services range from unpacking MTD to effective VAT planning and all of the routine compliance in-between. Once you drop off all your invoices and e-bank statements, our team will get to work processing and bookkeeping ready to prepare your VAT return.

Personal Tax and Wealth Planning

We all have to pay our taxes but within the legal framework there are numerous ways of saving tax and making sure you do not pay a penny more than is absolutely necessary. We have extensive experience in this area of work and always fight as hard as we can for our clients.

New clients are often surprised at how much can be done to help with their tax position. It is important that this work is done in advance and you should contact us as soon as possible.

All of our Tax Planning makes legitimate use of the Tax Legislation and Case Law, so that you are not put at additional risk from a full HMRC Enquiry, or where there are risks, these are pointed out to you.

Inheritance Tax, Trusts and Estates

Tailored wealth succession planning enables a smooth transition to the next generation as well as minimising tax liabilities.

We can advise individuals whose estate planning is close to the nil rate band or many times larger, inheritance tax on family homes, family businesses and investment portfolios.

However, estate planning is not solely about tax and we adopt a common sense approach, helping you to ensure your own financial needs are met and to avoid 'giving away too much too soon'.

Trusts can be used as part of a wealth protection strategy to protect assets as well as tax planning vehicles, particularly as part of inheritance tax planning.

Corporation Tax

Under Corporation Tax Self Assessment (CTSA), the legal responsibility for correctly calculating the corporation tax liability falls on business owners. The increased reporting obligations, investigation policies on the part of the tax authorities and harsher penalties for non-compliance mean that tax administration is a heavy burden on business big and small. We understand that running a business is a full time job and that you may not have the time or resources to take this on.

We are on hand to prepare and submit the corporate tax return, calculate the tax provision and ensure compliance with the CTSA regime. We can also assist in the preparation of an effective corporate tax planning approach to significantly improve the bottom line. Whether you are looking for advice on a one-off transaction or a review of your whole operation, we offer a range of corporate tax planning services to minimise your tax exposure.

Tax Investigation

It’s an unfortunate fact of business life that from time to time there will be disagreement between the taxpayer and HMRC. Sometimes it is the facts of the case that are in question but it can also be a point of law. Tax legislation isn’t always clear cut and aspects of the law are materially uncertain because HMRC are known to take a different view to that of practice.

FA 2008 Sch 36 is now the basis for what most people still call HMRC ‘investigations’ or ‘enquiries’. It represents a significant broadening of HMRC’s powers with very limited protections for taxpayers. We know that being served such a notice can cause a great deal of stress so if this does happen, we are happy to advise you on your options for appeal, compliance and disclosure.

Company Formation

Most people starting up in business do so because they have a good business proposition and the enterprise and commitment to see it through.
However, they may not be experts in the legal and financial aspects of running a business and such matters often appear daunting. Fortunately, we are well placed to advise you on the steps needed to launch your company. We will help you,
  • decide on the most suitable structure for your business;
  • appoint directors and issue subscriber shares;
  • complete all necessary minutes and resolutions. From here we can undertake the maintenance of the company's registers and assistance with its annual filings;
  • complete your registration procedures with Companies House and HMRC;
  • register your business for VAT and Corporation Tax and guide you through the setting up of PAYE and TRONC schemes;
  • keep on top of bookkeeping, VAT, payroll and other accounting requirements; and
  • help with all aspects of business compliance and administration.

Payroll Services

Running a payroll can be time consuming and complicated and divert resources from the core activities of your business. We provide practical advice on day-to-day enquiries and keep our clients up-to-date on changes in the law.

Our payroll service includes the completion of payslips, employer reports and electronic filing of payroll information to HM Revenue & Customs (Real Time Information). We will also administrate PAYE, National Insurance, SSP/SMP/SPP/SAP and Working Tax Credit so you’ll never have to worry about calculating statutory sick pay or dealing with student loan deductions.

At the end of the year, we will oversee the completion of statutory forms; including year-end returns, summary P60s, P11D and P9D benefit and expenses returns.

We also assist with Auto- enrolment duties and help our clients setup an appropriate work place pension scheme.

Beyond payroll compliance, we offer comprehensive advice on all employment tax issues including tax efficient remuneration strategies, planning for retirement and benefits planning.

Other Professional Services

Arguably one of a small company’s most powerful tools is its network. Our experts are independent firms or qualified advisers who have an array of sector specific knowledge and expertise making them well positioned to guide you through the next big transaction. We have established a strong working relationship over many years to ensure your specific circumstances are understood and dealt with in an effective manner.

We routinely work with several specialists in Mortgage and Legal and feel comfortable doing so because there are no corporate hoops to jump through to work with the best in the business. You will simply get a direct line and at the end of it a like-minded local expert that we can assure you is as hard-pressed on offering a personal service as we are.

Time to Pay Services

Although we ensure that our clients are informed well in advance of any deadlines, any number of difficult circumstances can arise which might cause you to fall behind on paperwork. The penalty for late filling and/or late payment can be very unforgiving. Although HMRC does not waive interest on late payment, you may be able to avoid additional penalties if you contact HMRC and agree a formal time to pay arrangement.

In general it is advisable to contact HMRC as soon as difficulty making payment is expected. However, HMRC’s systems do not easily facilitate making advance payment or negotiating an affordable settlement; in fact HMRC will expect the taxpayer to make the best offer they can and will not usually make suggestions about the amount it will accept as a regular payment. It is therefore advisable for you to discuss your debts with us so we can advise you on when to make contact and which debts to prioritise.

Spring Budget 2020

You don't have to throw the stone far into the pond to find a new sweeping crisis for this government. The Chancellor Rishi Sunak delivers his first Spring Budget amid throws of Brexit pandemonium, oil wars and pandemic flu. In the medium term, this takes real day-to-day spending per person back to pre-austerity levels.
